Detached Youth Work

Detached Youth Work

When out on the streets we use our listening and conversation skills and our humour to meet with and engage young people, build relationships and stimulate interest, fun and learning. We’ll talk about anything and everything, from what happened on TV the previous evening, football, music, to what’s been going on in young people’s lives and local issues.

Detached work provides an important opportunity to get to know young people ‘on their turf’, to listen and talk without pressure, to think through options, to offer support and advice, and to discuss important life issues. The street can be a great place to learn from one another and frequently (but not always) leads on to other activities. When we need a building for these activities, we'll hire one local to the young people. However, whatever other project work or activities we are doing, we are always out on the streets, chatting with young people.
