Many young people love sports, so it's not surprising that sports work has featured in M13's activities with young people for many years. In 2009, we began regular community football sessions and this work has grown steadily into a sports project initially funded by
Comic Relief, which now includes basketball and volunteer coaching opportunities as well as football.
Young people asked for more positive opportunities to engage in local sporting activities, as a result we work with them to not only facilitate training opportunities for them to come together and play, but also progress on to the point where they can volunteer or coach and give back to their community as a peer mentor.
The sports activities sessions we have run include the following:
We run weekly training sessions for young people who want to develop their skills and meet other young people from their community - Some of these young people have also completed their Level 1 basketball coaching qualifications through participation in our volunteer coach training programme.
For the last nine years M13 have, during the school holidays, provided free multi-sports activities and Football Camps for children in Brunswick, Grove Village and Coverdale. Workers are supported in this by local young leaders who have been trained by M13 as volunteers.
M13 have provided volunteering opportunities for local young people in both football and basketball.
M13 partnered in the founding of AFC in 2010. We successfully managed and ran the Ardwick FC 1st team for 3 seasons, delivering coaching sessions and match play opportunities for young people in the local area. Our young people developed key life skills helping them to progress from an adolescent to adult understanding of themselves and their place in society. Once we had completed our aim of Ardwick FC 1st team being in a sustainable position in terms of both finances and the establishment of a core group sharing common values and understanding, our time with the Ardwick FC 1st team came to an end.
We were a partner in the founding process of ACFC in 2012, and used our strategic community knowledge, contacts and experiences to support the organisations and teams included in ACFC in their mission of, "achieving together what we can not achieve alone."
